Protection of geographical indication "Vinh Chau" for purple onion products
On May 28, 2019, the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam issued Decision No. 2665 / QD-SHTT on the issuance of Certificate of registration of geographical indication No. 00075 for Vinh Chau onion. Soc Trang Department of Science and Technology is the organization that manages this geographical indication.

In Vietnam, red onion is grown in many places, in which planting is concentrated in Vinh Chau town (Soc Trang province), Ly Son island district (Quang Ngai province), Ninh Hai district (Ninh Thuan province), Go Cong district (Tien Giang province). If only considering in the Mekong Delta, Soc Trang is the province with the largest area of purple onion cultivation, which focuses on growing in Vinh Chau town.

In Vinh Chau, the purple onion tree is cultivated by people very early and often calls it "China onion". In 1966, purple onion is encouraged to grow in Vinh Chau with the name "red onion".

Products of Vinh Chau onion are always preferred by domestic and foreign consumers because this product has beautiful colors (purple or light red), large size and weight while the small onions, convenient for processing. Onion diameter is 4.40 ± 0.38 (cm), the diameter of onion is 2.73 ± 0.22 (cm), an onion has 3.03 ± 0.35 cloves / onion.

Geographical area: Ward 1, ward 2, Vinh Phuoc ward, Vinh Hai commune, Vinh Tan commune, Lac Hoa commune, Lai Hoa commune belong to Vinh Chau town, Soc Trang province.
