An Giang transforms crops during the dry season
The 2020 dry season comes early and lasts a long time, so An Giang soon plans to actively cope with drought, and convert suitable crops to bring about efficiency.

Mr. Nguyen Si Lam, director of An Giang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said: The plan to change crop structure from rice cultivation to vegetables, crops and fruit trees in the period of 2017-2020 has been assigned by the Provincial People's Committee. Initial implementation has yielded positive results. The current rice land maintains over 200,000 ha per year, producing 3 crops / year.

From 2017 so far, nearly 12,230 hectares of rice area have been converted to the province's main fruit trees, such as mango, banana, citrus and longan. Moreover, there are 31,130 ha of rice land converted to vegetables and crops, including vegetables of all kinds, such as chilli, Japanese okra, soybeans, vegetables, young fruits and crops, such as sesame, corn of all kinds, and beans tuber type. During the transition, localities implemented 15 demonstration models of maize varieties of ineffective rice land, scale of 0.2 ha / model. At the same time, organizing 18 training courses on techniques of growing hybrid corn, white corn, planting maize for stalks, young corn and etc for technical staffs and farmers to carry out the conversion.

According to Mr. Lam, this year due to the rather severe climate change situation, this summer-autumn crop, the agriculture sector recommends localities and farmers to accelerate the conversion of suitable crops in the dry season, use less rice and reduce less efficient rice land area to grow short-term crops to ensure income on each land area. Especially, in many years in An Giang, the restructuring of crops has been quite convenient.
