Deploying project for adaptation to climate change
On January 13, Tra Vinh provincial People's Committee held a conference to deploy the project for “Adaptation to climate change in the Mekong River Delta", the period from 2014 to 2020, supported finance by International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

The project was implemented in 30 communes of seven districts, with a total capital of 518 billion VND. In which, IFAD’s capital were 231 billion VND of preferential loans and non-refundable aid of 126 billion VND, the remains were counterpart funds from the state budget and contributions from local people in benefited areas.

The goal of the project is to enhance the adaptive capacity of communities that cope with climate change; building sustainable livelihoods for the rural poor people, especially for ethnic Khmer in changing environment conditions.

The project will invest to build 16 automatic salinity monitoring stations; building models of agricultural production, aquaculture for high economic efficiency; establishing financial organizations to provide capital support for poor producers, the construction of rural infrastructure works that adapt to climate change and reduce disaster risks. It is expected that the project will minimally benefit 62,500 rural poor people.

As expected, Tra Vinh province was affected early and most severely by climate change, rising sea levels and saltwater intrusion. Under climate change scenarios, when sea levels rose one meter, estimated 45.7% of the area of the province were submerged in water.

Currently, climate change has a direct impact on some areas of the province. Specifically, in Hiep Thanh commune, Duyen Hai district, the sea has eroded inland from 500-800 m, making over 120 hectares of land, productive land was washed away by the sea water. Salt water invaded into deeper inland, and caused significant impacts on production and people's lives.
